Ms. Bernhardt was famed for her 'golden voice' and her highly emotional performances in tragic and melodramatic roles. Legendary for her unconventionality and her extremes of passion, Bernhardt counted many of her roles triumphant performances, such as Cordelia in King Lear. Sarah also triumphed with great success in Hamlet - not as Ophelia, but as Prince Hamlet. It was her love of challenge that led her to take on the most demanding of roles regardless of disparities of age, gender or physical ability - she starred in La Dame aux Camélias, eight months after having her right leg amputated above the knee at the age of 71.
